The month-end close checklist for small businesses
Ten steps that turn a messy month into numbers you can trust, in about two hours.
The short answer
Reconcile every bank and credit card account, clear uncategorized transactions, review who owes you and who you owe, record payroll and recurring entries, then compare your profit and loss to last month to catch anything odd.
Reconcile everything
Match every bank, credit card and loan account to its statement. Unreconciled accounts are where errors hide.
Clear the inbox
Categorize uncategorized transactions and attach receipts while you still remember what they were.
Review receivables and payables
Follow up on invoices more than 30 days old and make sure every bill you owe is entered.
Record the recurring entries
Payroll, depreciation, loan interest and prepaid expenses that don’t flow in automatically.
Compare and close
Look at this month against last month and the same month last year. Anything that moved more than you expected deserves a second look. Then lock the period.
Questions
How long should month-end close take?
For most small businesses with organized books, two to four hours. If it takes days, the problem is usually daily habits, not the close itself.
